Basics of Nutrition

I am teaching a series of nutrition classes at my local gym for their new year challenge and I am going to be sharing some of them here! Today we are discussing the basics of good nutrition and what it can do for your body.

(I am sharing my outline for our discussions. If you have further questions, ask! I would love to share more details)

What is Good nutrition?

  1. Properly control energy balance.
  2. Provides nutrient density. (Foods that will provide all your needed nutrients and only necessary calories)
  3. Achieves Health, body composition and performance goals.
  4. Is honest and outcome based

Is nutrition your limiting factor?

A limiting factor is something that keeps you from achieving optimal results. You can go to the gym everyday and do the best workouts but with out proper nutrition you can only get so far. Nutrition is an easy limiting factor to get rid of.

What is outcome based nutrition?

This means: Good nutrition requires results!

“In an outcome based world, theory is meaningless & results are everything. You shouldn’t believe you doing a good job based on what you read in a book, saw in a magazine or watched on TV. You can only judge you plan based on the results you produce. To this end, good nutrition equals results” (ISSA Specialist in Fitness Nutrition. PG11)

So where do I begin? Food vs. Nutrients

Understanding the nutrients that make up our food is a good place to begin learning about how said nutrients will change your body.

Macronutrients : Carbs, Protein, Fat

  • Carbs: complex vs. Simple
  • Fat: Saturated (butter, animal fat, coconut oil) Vs. Unsaturated (olive oil, avocado, peanuts) Poly unsaturated (omega-3 & omega -6, flax, sunflower)

Micronutrients: Water, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients

Keep in mind: food has 3 outcomes: Storage, use in energy production, or excretion.
